American Craft Show / Contemporary ArtFair NYC |
|
DATES: November 18-20, 2011
LOCATION: Javits Convention Center (New York, NY)
One thing that can be said about the pairing of the American Craft Show and the Contemporary ArtFair at the Javits is it’s real impressive. I’ve been to so many craft and art shows that I’ve lost count, but have never visited a show like this.
Much of what I think the producers (American Art Marketing) were trying to accomplish with their inaugural show last year, they managed to succeed with at this year’s show. It certainly helped that the One Of A Kind NYC show – which was the same weekend last year, and competed with this show for both artists and shoppers – was canceled.
What impressed me the most was the sensation I felt first entering the showroom Saturday afternoon, where to the right side I encountered what pretty much amounted to rows of mini art galleries featuring modern paintings and sculpture. Artists are offered the option to buy a booth package that included a hard white wall where they could hang their work, and many of them smartly opted . . .

DATES: November 19-20, 2011
LOCATION: Staples High School (Westport, CT)

As you drive in and around Westport – as one tends to do if they totally ignore the voice on the GPS and decide to “wing-it” - you can easily see why this area is a ripe location for a craft show.
You can almost hear the historical homes and developments call out “I need something handmade by an artisan to fill an empty nook I have in the corner of the living room . . . and I need it now!”
Since this was my first trip to this show in Westport, I relied heavily on speaking with artists that have been exhibiting here over the years for some input on how the show has or hasn’t changed since Artrider took over the management of the show from the Westport Young Women’s League (who are still involved in sponsoring the show) and the overall quality . . .

Greater Charleston Fine Arts Festival |
|
DATES: October 29-30, 2011
LOCATION: Patriots Park (Mount Pleasant, SC)
What do you, a show producer, do when you plan a fine arts festival, find a nice outdoor location in an affluent suburb of a large city, attract quality artists, spend money on advertising, get decent whether and . . . . nobody shows up?
Ok, not exactly nobody, but certainly not the crowds both the exhibitors and artists were hoping they’d see.
Paragon Events, the producers of the Greater Charleston Fine Arts Festival, experienced what a lot of producers experience staging a festival the first year – emptiness. But that shouldn’t stop them from pursuing this for another year.
From the artists we spoke with, there seemed to be a genuine need for a Fall show like this in the Charleston area – if not downtown Charleston (which was the suggestion of many). It’s proven that the residents of Charleston . . .
