American Craft Council Public Show - Baltimore |
|
DATES: February 22-24, 2013
LOCATION: Baltimore Convention Center (Baltimore, MD)

Like every other show the CSN reviews, we only get to experience the front-end. What we see and experience as a shopper is pretty much what we go on in our reports.
It’s not until the exhibitor surveys are in and the exhibitor comments are read that we can really get a feel for an entire show.
If you are a craft collector or just someone who wants to pick up a gift of handmade craft, then this show is probably the best place to go. It’s not just that the overall quality of the work is great, it’s also that there is just so much great work from which to choose.
Sure, there might be a few little annoyances that . . .

Buyers Market of American Craft |
|
DATES: February 16-18, 2013
LOCATION: Pennsylvania Convention Center (Philadelphia, PA)

The BMAC, to me, has always been the one wholesale show that best represents the type of craft gallery or gift shop where I like to go to buy something for my wife, a gift for a friend or a piece of art to place on a shelf at home.
The work is well crafted and doesn’t break my budget - even at a 100% mark-up.
I am not a collector although I have collected a fair number of pieces of work through the years. For me a craft gallery or gift shop is a place I visit usually when I want to buy a gift for someone else.
When you walk into a gallery and gift shop across the country looking for a handmade piece of jewelry or pottery, what you see in that shop is what you see at the BMAC.

New York Int'l. Gift Fair - Handmade Designer Maker |
|
DATES: January 26 - 29, 2013
LOCATION: Javits Center (New York, NY)

Through the different incarnations and travels that the Handmade Section (now known as Handmade Designer Maker) has gone through in the past ten or so years, it still seems to be a rather successful destination for retailers searching for handmade work to sell in their gift shops and galleries.
At first glance, when one walks into the main entrance of the Javits on a Sunday- where primary registration for the show is located - the first thing that’s noticed is the busy, busy atmosphere.
Walking Personal Accessories and Accent On Design, for example, one can get frustrated navigating through a crowded aisles . . .

East Lansing Art Festival |
|
DATES: May 19-20, 2012
LOCATION: Streets of downtown East Lansing (East Lansing, MI)

For years one of the most popular shows in the Midwest, the East Lansing Art Festival has been doing for a long time what a lot of previously craft-only outdoor shows are becoming - full family events.
With the advantage of taking place in a major college town, this art festival is able to attract some of the best craft artists in the nation, as well as benefit from an abundance of local arts/crafts enthusiasts.
In addition to the artists section, the East Lansing Art Festival includes . . .

LOCATION: Main Street (Greenville, SC)

As an artist that does shows for a living - especially outdoor shows - there are somethings you can plan for and somethings that take you surprise for. Bad weather you plan for, but hope it doesn’t have too much of an impact on your sales for the weekend.
Despite pretty much being rained-out on Sunday (the 3rd and last day of the show) most of the artists at Artisphere felt that it was a success.
That says a lot for this art festival that is in it’s 8th year of existence. The producers of the Artisphere, through their jurying, have done a good job through of attracting some of the regions best artists . . .
